Company Description: Greater Washington Co. Food Bank(GWCFB) is a non-profit that has provided emergency food services to the Washington County community for over 30 years. In the past three years, GWCFB has moved to a larger facility and expanded the services it offers, improving its financial sustainability through the creation of a thrift store, providing life skills education to the community through the Healthy Habits Training Center, and offering fresh food and agriculture education to the community through The Farm program. Our programs are expanding and we are looking for hard-working, passionate interns to help us continue to grow.

Internship Description: The Agriculture Production & Education Intern will assist the Agricultural Innovation Manager in all aspects of farm production and educational programming at The Farm. This will include a variety of tasks, including assisting with the management of The Farm’s raised bed gardens, vegetable production fields, and the fruit tree orchard. The intern will also assist in the construction and management of The Farm’s new hydroponic and aquaponics systems. The intern will work with the Agricultural Innovation Manager in the development of agriculture education curriculum and may also participate in educational workshops and presentations (currently, educational programming is being conducted virtually due to Covid 19). The intern will also have the opportunity to learn about grant writing and may assist with research, writing parts of grant applications, and data collection as part of this process. The intern may be asked to assist in overseeing volunteer groups who come to the food bank to volunteer at The Farm. Tasks will include both indoor office work as well as farm tasks outside. The specific projects assigned to the intern can be customized to the intern’s interests and skill set. We practice social distancing and Covid 19 mitigation measures, and are still able to operate as an essential service. 

Qualifications/Skills: Farming and gardening experience is a plus, but is not required. We are willing to teach you agriculture skills as long as you demonstrate a strong interest in our work and a desire to learn. We are looking for hard workers who can work independently when necessary, and also work well as part of a team. Interns must be flexible, as the tasks and work conditions on a farm can change quickly due to the weather and other factors. Interns should have a strong interest in food systems and social justice. Interns should be able to lift at least 30-50lbs, and some physical activity will be required as part of internship responsibilities. 

Work Schedule: Internships typically average between 15-20 hours per week but can be flexible based on students’ schedule & for-credit requirements. GWCFB office hours are 8am-4:30pm. Some evenings and Saturdays may also be available. Accepting intern applications for Fall 2020, and Spring 2021 semesters.
